Brigade Adventures

 

 

Detailed below are some of our adventures which particularly in latter years have involved raising money in support of our local community:
   

Eleanor Christening

1981- Boughton House

 

An airfield Fire Tender was purchased from RAF Bitteswell for £600 and was christened "Queen Eleanor" after Geddington's most famous inhabitant. Click title above for more information.

1982  (August) - Duxford

 

A trip to the Duxford show of 1982 which included a fire engine competition. Photograph aside shows members of the brigade attending. Click title above to see more.

1987 - Swynnerton

Setting off

1989 – The Source of the Ise

The first great adventure when the Brigade set off upstream to the source of the Ise. Ten hours later we emerged at a muddy puddle overlooking Naseby. Click title above to see more.

   

Buckingham Palace 1994

1994 – Blazing the Trail

On 28th November 1290, while on her way to join the King in Scotland Queen Eleanor was taken gravely ill and died at Harby, Nr Lincoln. Her body was taken to and entombed in Westminster Abbey. The King was so grief stricken he gave orders that every place where her bier had rested, a cross be erected in her memory. In total there were 12 crosses but today only three remain. The one at Geddington is in best condition and represents her love for the area and that the beir rested here on 7th December 1290. Click the above title for more.

   

1996 - Les Attaques

1996 saw the first GVFB visit abroad. The then Commanding Officer Dick Green devised and drew up a scheme to take some Geddington villagers over seas!

1997 CO LLoyd Marlow

1997 – Spanish Origins

The fire engine and brigade members journeyed to Spain, to Los Heuglos Abbey where Eleanor was born and history began. Click the above title for more.

   

Carnarfon Castle

1998 – Burning Ambitions

Climbing the "four peaks" was the aim but at Carnarfon Castle in the shadow of Snowden a further connection with Eleanor as this was where she gave birth to the first Prince of Wales. Click the above title for more.

   

Preparing for the “Paddle”

 

 2000 - Blazing Paddles

This adventure was to Canoe from the Geddington Bridge to the sea. Five days and 120 miles later we emerged with blisters and aching limbs at the Wash. Click the above title for more.

2002 - Feet of Fire

 

Friday 18th October and a fresh autumn evening saw 16 members of the Brigade meet at the Cross to undertake the 2002 great adventure. Over the weekend 25 members circumnavigated the County boundary – 175 Miles. Click the above title for more.

 

   

Where is this pub?

2004 - Aleblazers

The 2004 adventure was "Aleblazers" - a dramatic departure from customary activities involving firemen in visits to assess every pub (some 650 plus)  in Northamptonshire. Click the above title for more.

   

Making amends

2006 - Longshanks Redemption

On 3rd & 4th June members of the Brigade visited the death place of Eleanor at Harby in Lincolnshire. Click the above title for more.
